DLCO Test (Diffusing Capacity of the Lungs)
Advanced Lung Function Testing to Assess Oxygen Transfer Efficiency
What is a DLCO Test?
The DLCO (Diffusing Capacity of the Lungs for Carbon Monoxide) test is a specialized pulmonary function test that measures how effectively oxygen passes from the lungs into the bloodstream.
This test helps evaluate the lung's ability to transfer gases and is particularly useful in diagnosing and monitoring interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, emphysema, and other chronic respiratory conditions.
Why is a DLCO Test Performed?
Who Should Consider a DLCO Test?
Patients experiencing chronic cough, unexplained shortness of breath, suspected pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, pulmonary hypertension, or long-term smoking history may benefit from this test. It is also recommended for patients with abnormal chest imaging or reduced oxygen levels.
How is the DLCO Test Performed?
During the test, the patient inhales a small, harmless amount of carbon monoxide mixed with air and holds the breath for a few seconds before exhaling. The machine measures how much gas is absorbed into the bloodstream.
The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and typically completed within 15–20 minutes. Results are interpreted by a pulmonologist to determine lung gas exchange efficiency.
